A Note on Me as a Reader

Oh hey there

I’m Meg :) I read these books. I write this blog. I design the workouts. So, before you dive in, here’s a note on my personal reading preferences.

Enjoying a book is a subjective and personal experience. So, before you read any of my reviews, get to know me as a reader!

The books I read are mostly in the fantasy and/or thriller or horror genres. I do a good mix of physical books, ebooks, and audiobooks (mostly listening when I’m exercising.) Don’t get me wrong, I’ll read pretty much anything, but expect to see fantasy and/or thriller the most over here.

Things I enjoy and appreciate in stories generally include:

  • A lush, complex fantasy world

  • Heists, for some reason

  • A strong and believable FMC (bonus points if she’s an assassin or otherwise unhinged)

  • Found family

  • Spice…well, believable, well-written spice that has a strong basis

  • Horror and hauntings

  • A good, old-fashioned mystery (bonus points if it’s solved by elderly ladies)

  • A twist that I’m genuinely not expecting

  • LGBTQIA+ characters, themes, and relationships

Things that turn me off in stories generally include:

  • Insta love

  • Animal death/torture/anything but being treated like a precious lil baby

  • Not passing the Bechdel test (whatever the book version is)

  • Books that I feel are too long for truly no reason

  • Characters making choices that don’t align with who they were portrayed to be

  • Characters making decisions that are clearly idiotic

  • A twist I can see from miles away

Remember, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with these (in fact, there are some books that have one or a few of these that I super love.) They just, in general, aren’t my cup of tea.

Still here? Woohoo! Let’s get to reading.
